I have a program I put together where I send out small notepads with my contact information on it that I instruct people to keep by their phones along with a pen to jot down notes during a phone call. I send these out about twice a month and spend about $250 a month on it.

It works very well and ensures that I am always in front of the customer, literally, because I have my picture on the notebooks.

Hey Crystal, thanks for the suggestion. sometimes, it's hard to pick the right gifts for your customers. Not to mention turning them to fans. It'll be worth a try.

Crystal,

Another great post. I've lost track of all the crappy free giveaways from various conventions I have attended. Some make great gag gifts for friends though, like this creepy stuffed mascot of an old man holding a golf club I got a few months back (basically it was this guy as a stuffed animal: http://larryroesch.com)

I think it's important that your free stuff be both useful to your potential customer and relevant to your business. I don't need another stress ball with a company's logo on it - my dogs have enough toys as it is. One of the nicest free gifts I've seen was a mini USB Flash drive with the company's logo on it. When I plugged it in, I found a little video presentation about the company and their portfolio of work.

Jeanne -- Welcome, and thanks for your comment!

What a great idea to have your logo on something everyone will be eyeing until the cake is cut. You're right to avoid a cheap cake server, too, for that same reason.

Sounds like you're looking for something especially nice. If you could find a decent cake server, I'm thinking a pouf of decorative ribbon at the base of the handle may "take it up a notch"? And if you could match the ribbon to the bridesmaid's dresses, or the school colors, or the party theme color, it would be personalized for the customer as well as customized for your business.
